PERS is on a ruinous cycle

Mississippi’s state employees are griping because they again may not get an across-the-board raise. Schoolteachers are griping because the raise they may get is less than they believe is deserved.

One of the main factors, though, holding down their pay is the steadily rising cost of what it takes to provide them with their pensions.


Politicians can get too old

Delbert Hosemann is a spry 71. He has the slim build of the longtime long-distance runner he is. Although he’s not done a half-marathon in two years, he still runs 3 or 4 miles every other day and keeps a 9-minute-per-mile pace. That wouldn’t be shabby for someone 30 years younger.
