Tourism tax passes with 76%

Applause erupted from tourism tax supporters Monday night at City Hall as Mayor Justin McKenzie announced 76 percent of voters had approved the referendum.

Just 60 percent was needed, clearing the way for a 3 percent sales tax on restaurants and hotels that is expected to take effect July 1.



City to buy garbage truck

Columbia aldermen are expected to buy a garbage truck Tuesday after opening bids this week, the latest step in the city taking back over trash pickup.

The board took four bids under advisement at a special meeting Wednesday to allow time to sort out differences in prices, buyback provisions and types of trucks.

Trailer involved in family dispute burns down Tuesday

A property owner in northeast Marion County reported she saw a relative coming out of a trailer on her property just before a blaze burned it down Tuesday morning.

Arson investigators were set to come to the scene at 137 Russell Lane Wednesday. It has a Sumrall address but is in the Christian Union community in Marion County.
