I can’t take original credit for this realization — that goes to Columbia head coach Chip Bilderback — but it’s quite amazing that the three Marion County public schools only lost to each other on the gridiron during the regular season.
The East Marion Eagles (7-2) got the opportunity to rest up during a bye in the final week of the regular season and will return to the field Friday night to host West Lincoln (5-6) in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
After reaching the south state championship in Class 1A last year despite being on the road for all three playoff games, the East Marion Eagles will get to host a playoff game Nov. 8 as Region 8-2A champs after outlasting North Forrest 8-0 on the road Oct. 24.
Heading into their Oct. 24 matchup with Tylertown, the West Marion Trojans were expecting to be without several of their key playmakers, but they all were able to tough it out and led West Marion to a 42-13 road win.
It’s playoff time for the Columbia Academy Cougars (2-7) as they secured the No. 9 seed in the 12-team Class 4A field and will travel to No. 8 Clinton Christian Academy (5-5) Friday night for a first-round showdown.
