Friday Night Lights: CHS to host south stateBy JOSHUA CAMPBELL,
The Columbia Wildcats (13-0) will be playing host to Jeff Davis County (8-5) in the Class 3A south state championship game next Friday after they beat Magee (10-4) and Jeff Davis knocked off West Marion (12-2) tonight.
While Columbia’s defense shined from the get go with Teshonne Franklin coming up with his eighth interception of the year in the first quarter, it took until the late second quarter for the Wildcats to get on the scoreboard. After converting a long fourth down, Columbia scored on an Omarie Johnson 10-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.
Moments later the Wildcats recovered a fumble to set up a 27-yard touchdown pass from Javen Moses to Sadarion Magee to make it 14-0 going into halftime. Columbia recovered another fumble to open the second half, and Johnson made a house call from 40 yards out to put the home squad up 21-0. Late in the third quarter Columbia added to its lead with a 60-yard rushing touchdown by Josh Brown. Jonathan Wiltz punctuated the victory with a 30-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats will take on a Jeff Davis team they beat 36-22 Oct. 11 for the right to go to the state championship Dec. 6 at Southern Miss. On the north side Noxubee County advanced to the state semifinals, but the Choctaw County vs. Amanda Elzy matchup was postponed until tomorrow afternoon due to weather.
Jeff Davis-14 West Marion-0
The Trojans’ dream season came to a close in a hard-luck loss to the Jaguars on their home field. West Marion had several opportunities to score but was unable to find the end zone for the first time this season.
Jeff Davis was forced to punt on its opening drive, but an offsides penalty extended the drive. Two plays later the Jaguars struck on a 35-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 with the secondary being sucked in on a playaction.
The Trojans were able to get inside the Jaguars’ 30 on the ensuing drive but turned it over on downs. They got inside Jeff Davis territory on their next drive as well but once again turned it over on downs.
Jeff Davis nearly added to its lead on the next possession, but Octavious Harvey made a big tackle on 4th-and-goal to get the ball back. West Marion drove it down to the Jeff Davis 7 just before the end of the half but had four chances inside the 10 stuffed by the Jaguars.
The visiting squad’s lead expanded to 14-0 with 3:05 to go in the third quarter on an 8-yard touchdown run. West Marion once again got into Jeff Davis territory and had a would-be touchdown dropped and turned it over on downs.
After Jeremiah Holmes left the game with an injury to his throwing arm, the Trojans had a pair of passes to Jartavious Martin and Harvey pick up 51 yards, but Jayden Duncan was subsequently intercepted to end any hope of a comeback.
