Murder in Morgantown

A Morgantown man is behind bars after allegedly killing his father late Thursday night.

Samuel Dathan Peak, 32, of Morgantown is currently awaiting his bond hearing.

The body of Jimmy Peak, 57, was discovered in response to a call last night to Carroll Loop in Morgantown, according to a press release from Marion County Sheriff Berkley Hall. While investigators and authorities were at the scene, the suspect’s vehicle was seen. In the attempt to apprehend the suspect, a short manhunt in the area took place. The B.B. “Sixty” Rayburn Correctional Center K-9 unit assisted in the manhunt.

At approximately 12:17 a.m., the K-9 unit arrived and five minutes later the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

While it is considered a homicide, the cause of death is pending autopsy results, according to Chief Deputy Jamie Singley.

The investigation is ongoing by the sheriff’s office, district attorney’s office, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Jessie Graham, Marion County coroner, according to the press release.
