Feb. 11 Marion County Basketball Tournament Roundup

By JOSHUA CAMPBELL,

In a winner-take-all battle for the fourth and final playoff spot out of Region 8-3A, the Columbia Lady Wildcats dominated West Marion in the second and third quarters to run away with a 57-36 victory at Columbia Tuesday night.

With the win, Columbia will play Jeff Davis County in the second round of the district tournament Thursday afternoon at 4.

Meanwhile, West Marion’s season is over, though the Lady Trojans had their best season in six years.

Jasmine Sheppard poured in a career-high 29 points to lead the Lady Wildcats, while Aniyah Fortenberry had 17.

Hannah Miller led West Marion with nine points, and Raven Jones and Malasia Leverette each had seven.

Seminary 50 - West Marion 44

The West Marion boys team had its season come to an end in the first round of the district tournament as well, letting a fourth quarter lead slip away in a 50-44 loss to Seminary.

The Trojans were up eight early in the final stanza but had three starters foul out, leading to a big swing on the scoreboard. A Qavonte Swanigan layup and two Jeremiah Holmes free throws put West back up 44-41 with 2:15 remaining, but Seminary’s Ty Crosby tied it back up with an and-1 hook shot. Following a Seminary timeout, Crosby put the Bulldogs up 47-44 with another 3-point play the old-fashioned way.

Larry Magee, who led the Trojans with 17 points, had a wide open look from behind the arc to potentially tie it with 15 seconds left, but his shot went wide left. O’Marion Husband and Holmes each had eight points.
