Friday Night Lights: Week 1 recapsBy C-P STAFF REPORTS,
Columbia and West Marion blew out their opening opponents of 2019 Friday night, while Columbia Academy lost a hard-fought rivalry contest on the road.
East Marion also got off to a positive start, downing Amite County on the road.
Here’s a recap of the games involving Marion County teams:
Columbia 59, Mendenhall 6
Columbia jumped all over Mendendall, leading 25-0 after the first quarter and 46-6 at halftime, and the No. 1 ranked 3A team in Mississippi cruised to 59-6 win in front of a large home crowd.
Senior Kentrel Bullock, an Ole Miss commit, showed his electrifying speed on four first-half touchdowns, and the Wildcats’ big and fast defense completely shut down 4A Mendenhall’s running game.
The Wildcats will go across town to face in-county rival East Marion next Friday.
Simpson Academy 20, Columbia Academy 12
In an encouraging and inspiring performance, Columbia Academy went toe to toe with Simpson Academy and just came up short in a 20-12 season opening loss.
Simpson, who is a division above CA in MAIS, went to the state championship last season and returned the majority of their stars.
Cougars quarterback Ras Pace connected on touchdown passes to Patrick Gill and Robert Johnson in the loss.
CA takes on Adams County Christian next Friday night in its home opener.
West Marion 34, Purvis 0
West Marion cruised at Purvis, winning 34-0 as Jartavious Martin and Octavious Harvey both scored multiple touchdowns.
The Trojans will host Lumberton next Friday night in Foxworth.
East Marion 26, Amite County
In Liberty, East Marion fell behind 7-0 early, but the Eagles came back to take a 13-7 lead in the second quarter and didn’t trail again.
The Eagles will face a heavy test on their home field next week as they host Columbia.
Caption: Columbia defensive back Josh Brown rises up for an interception in the second quarter Friday night against Mendenhall. The sophomore then made an equally electrifying return, taking it 78 yards to the house for a touchdown.
