Sheriff's Office finds nearly $100K in vehicle after pursuit
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office found nearly $100,000 in cash inside a New York man’s vehicle after stopping him following a chase Thursday and says it believes the money is connected to narcotics.
Michael Nave Vega, 26, of New York, N.Y., is out on $11,000 bond related to five charges from the incident.
The Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that it received a call about reckless driving on Thursday that reported the vehicle was leaving the Columbia city limits heading north on Mississippi 13 at a high speed. Deputy Jeremy Sellers tried to stop the vehicle, but it increased speed and fled, the news release said.
The pursuit continued into Jeff Davis County and ended on Highway 184 just off Highway 13. Vega was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit, the news release said.
Deputies found $98,900 in cash and determined the money was used in narcotics activity, the sheriff's office said in the release.
Nave is charged with felony eluding a law officer, disorderly conduct, passing vehicles on the left side of the road, disobedience of traffic devices and failure to yield right of way.
