Friday Night Lights: Wildcats, Trojans remain unbeaten

Week 5 is in the books and both the Columbia Wildcats and West Marion Trojans remain undefeated, but they got to 5-0 in very different ways Friday night.

Columbia vs. Lawrence County

Columbia struggled mightily in its homecoming game against Lawrence County with 12 penalties and four turnovers, but the Wildcats still managed to hang on for a 20-13 victory.

The Cougars struck first after a Kentrel Bullock fumble as Lawrence County quarterback Haden Mullins connected with Brian Bogan for a 36-yard touchdown. It was off a play-action fake that sucked the entire Wildcats defense in. Then after a Columbia punt, Lawrence County’s Kylan Cooper scored on a sweep to put the Cougars up 13-0 going into the second quarter.

The Wildcats finally received a spark as Javen Moses hit a streaking Tryson Johnson in stride for a 75-yard touchdown. Moses hit Johnson again on the next drive, this time for 47 yards, to set up a Bullock 3-yard touchdown to put CHS up 14-13 going into halftime.

Bullock added to the lead midway through the third quarter with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone. The Wildcats defense stood strong the final three quarters of the game to preserve the victory.

Columbia has a bye week next week and will play next at Tylertown to open district play Oct. 4.

West Marion at Sumrall

The Trojans controlled the action in Sumrall from start to finish in a 43-0 blowout victory. It’s West Marion’s third shutout of the season, and the Trojans defense has only allowed 20 points all season through five games.

The Trojans travel to Vancleave next Friday to take on the Bulldogs (3-2). Vancleave beat South Jones 35-10 Friday.
