A Sandy Hook woman suffered a severe leg injury in a rollover crash Wednesday morning on U.S. 98 east of Columbia.
Anita Sawin, 58, of Sandy Hook was driving her gray Nissan Versa eastbound on U.S. 98 near Pierce Road, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Travis Luck.
“The vehicle left the roadway to the left causing the driver to overcorrect back across both eastbound lanes and leave the roadway on the right,” he said. “The vehicle collided with an embankment and overturned one time and came to a final rest off the eastbound lane of 98 facing west.”
The Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, along with several Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies and AAA Ambulance Service which transported Sawin to nearby Life Church, where the Rescue 9 helicopter met them and flew her to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg for treatment.
According to Luck, the MHP report said Sawin was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers and first responders remained on the scene for about an hour.
