The Columbia Animal Control and Rescue Center needs help.

Animal Shelter Coordinator Mallory Belk said Wednesday that it needs volunteers and donations most of all.

The Summer Feeding Program is in full-swing at Jefferson Middle and Columbia High schools.

More than 50 young cheerleaders got to learn alongside the Columbia High School cheer squad this week and concluded a four-day camp with performances in front of family and friends Thursday.

Nearly 20 minutes of the Tuesday night City Board of Aldermen meeting was spent discussing garbage cans.

UPDATE: The Sheriff's Office said Janekqua Henry, the victim's girlfriend, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. She's being held at the Marion County Jail.

Body cams coming soon

The Columbia Police Department now has eight body cameras and is working on a plan to begin using them soon, Chief Michael Kelly told aldermen Tuesday.

Mayor Justin McKenzie asked Kelly to issue a press release once the cameras are in operation to let the public know the city is trying to be transparent.



City buys new garbage truck

Columbia aldermen bought a new garbage truck Wednesday, and the city plans to take back over pickup come Oct. 1.

The new truck won’t be delivered until December, so the city is looking at buying a used truck to put into service after its contract with Waste Pro expires Sept. 30. It would need a used truck anyway for a backup.
