In the most anticipated race of the night for U.S. Senate, Marion County mirrored the rest of Mississippi with Cindy Hyde-Smith and Mike Espy leading substantially over Chris McDaniel.

The Associated Press has called the election as a runoff between the Republican Hyde-Smith and Democrat Espy, which will be Nov. 27.




Marion County escapes storms

Marion County escaped the brunt of storms that did heavy damage nearby and even killed a woman on the wet side of the state.

Marion County was placed under a tornado warning shortly before 4 a.m. The same storm damaged homes and buildings and injured several people in neighboring Washington Parish.






Trial set in Duff case

The trial for a former Columbia man accused of plotting to kidnap and extort billionaire businessman Tommy Duff is set for May in Poplarville.

Victor Mitchell, 44, faces up to life in prison and has remained in the Lamar County Jail without bond since his arrest on Nov. 19, 2016.
