Myrtles to celebrate 40 years

A lot of things have changed in 40 years, but some things still stay the same.

One constant in Columbia has been The Myrtles Nursing Center.

The Myrtles opened Jan. 14, 1979, as a 60-bed nursing center in the same location as it is now on Alberta Avenue. On July 25, there will be a 40th anniversary celebration.

Wilks dubbed All-American

The legend of Columbia Academy slugger Slade Wilks continues to grow with the rising senior named both an Under Armour and Perfect Game All-American.

That marks him as one of the top 40 players in the nation and gives him the opportunity to play at two big league stadiums in nationally broadcast games.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at Shiloh Baptist Church for Willodean Bullock, 91, of Kokomo, who died on Monday, June 17 at her residence. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Repairs requested

Circuit Judge Tony Mozingo and Circuit Clerk Janette Nolan approached the Board of Supervisors Tuesday about funding improvements to the Marion County Courthouse.

Grand jury members first came to Nolan and were very concerned, she said.



Brooms win top yard for July

Katie Broom and her family at 1402 Broad St. are honored to be the recipients of the July Yard of the Month.

“It’s an honor because I do take pride in my yard,” Broom said. “I’ve done everything myself, and I love to keep a neat yard.”

Broom added it was an unexpected honor, and she appreciates being chosen.

Helen J. Sanders Sweatt

Private services will be held at a later date for Helen J. Sanders Sweatt, 90, who died on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019.

 

She was a lifelong resident of Columbia.

 

She was preceded in death by a son, Herbie Ray Reid.

103 candles at this birthday

The family of Steve Bournes of Columbia hosted a party for him Friday on the date of his 103rd birthday at the Myrtles Nursing Center. Step-children and nieces and nephews attended, coming from as far away as California. Bournes is an Oak Vale native and spent his life in Columbia, where he operated a barber shop on Corner Avenue.
