Friday Night Lights: CA falls to PCS, West stays perfect

For the second year in a row, the West Marion Trojans will enter Region 8-3A play undefeated after topping Vancleave 33-7 on the road Friday night. Meanwhile, PCS proved to be too strong for Columbia Academy to handle on its homecoming night in a lopsided 41-22 loss, and East Marion won a shootout at Bogalusa 48-44.

Simply spectacular

Record crowds estimated at between 8,000 and 10,000 lined the streets for Saturday’s Kiwanis Club of Columbia Christmas Parade followed by a light show and fireworks.

The parade featured a little bit of everything, from marching bands to the Honey Island Clydesdales and dozens of floats from local schools, churches and businesses.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church for Mrs. Gracie Broome, 86, who died on Friday, Jan. 25 in Columbia. Burial followed in Lowland Cemetery. Rev. Dewitt Bain and Rev. Ed Steele officiated at the services.

A line of strong storms caused damage to buildings in the county Jan. 2 although no one was injured.

The Marion County Board of Supervisors opened the year by electing District 5 Supervisor Calvin Newsom as president and District 1 Supervisor Randy Dyess as vice president for 2017.


Person of interest in custody

A person of interest in a suspicious death investigation from Friday night in Kokomo was taken into custody without incident Sunday morning.
Shortly before 9, Marion and Wathall County deputies responded to a tip in Wathall County on Henry Smith Road where Ronnie Smith was located and taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing.
