Wreck claims 2 lives on 98

Marion County is grieving the loss of what it feels like “one of its own” following a fatal accident that claimed the life of former Columbia resident Forrest Phillips and another man.

Phillips, 60, of Hattiesburg was killed in a head-on collision at 9:54 p.m. Tuesday in Walthall County near the Pike County line.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at Shiloh Baptist Church for Willodean Bullock, 91, of Kokomo, who died on Monday, June 17 at her residence. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Willease Forbes, 77, of Foxworth  died Friday, July 5, 2019, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. A native to Marion County  and longtime resident of Foxworth, she was a certified nursing assistant.

A bit of history was made Monday as the first total eclipse in decades took place and students across Columbia and Marion County had the chance to observe.






City to explore annexation

The City of Columbia may grow its borders if a study approved by the Board of Aldermen Monday shows the expansion is feasible.

In a special meeting Monday, the Board, Mayor Justin McKenzie and engineers Jeff Dungan and Sean Burns met with Mike Slaughter of Slaughter and Associates for nearly two hours at City Hall.
