Lance Poirier of the Columbia Police Department inspects a bag of drugs and drug paraphernalia seized during a traffic stop Monday at the corner of South High School Avenue and Church Street. The driver was charged with a DUI, and two people received possession charges. Poirier said meth, meth paraphernalia and marijuana was seized. However, because the amount of drugs was small, the charges were misdemeanors. With the current state of the coronavirus pandemic, Columbia police opted to tow the vehicle and let the people leave from the scene on their own accord. Sgt. Kyle Pickett said the department doesn’t want to overload the jail at this time for minor crimes and would rather give citations with summons for a court date. Police did not release the names of the people who received the citations.
