Members of a Marion County church damaged by the April 19 tornado found a troubling change Thursday morning: $3,000 worth of shingles purchased to repair the roof had been stolen.
The theft happened at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, which is on Mississippi 13 South about 13 miles south of Columbia and is pastored by the Rev. Cleveland Peters.
“Our church is real disturbed,” said member Georgia Fisher, who is asking for the public’s help in catching the culprits. “We’re a small church.”
Marion County Chief Deputy Jamie Singley said the Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft.
Fisher said the insurance company had paid the congregation to make repairs that came from the April 19 twister that destroyed multiple homes and businesses, killing one person, in the southern part of the county. She said half of the work had been done, and the contractor was supposed to finish Thursday.
Fisher noted that the felt was not taken so whoever took the shingles might try to obtain felt. She hopes that might help in catching them.
