Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2019, at Bethel Baptist Church in Hazlehurst for Bernice Izard Ashley 87, of Columbia, who died on Thursday, May, 2 in Columbia after a brief illness. Burial followed in Bethel Baptist Church outside of Hazlehurst alongside her husband and son. Pastor Millard Moak officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until noon on Monday, May 6 at Hathorn Funeral Home.
She was born on April 9, 1932, and was raised in the Bethel Baptist Community outside of Hazlehurst, with parents being the late J.T. Hardy Izard and Alma M. Izard.
She married Buford M. Ashley Sr. and enjoyed 64 years of marriage. They lived in Columbia for the most of their lives. She was a wonderful wife and mother. She enjoyed Calvary Baptist Church, friends, fishing, flowers, camping and many other diverse activities along with family/friends including a snowmobile trip and four wheeling while camping.
She worked at the Pioneer Parachute Plant, Columbia School Cafeteria system and as a secretary at a medical office in Hattiesburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hardy and Alma Izard; husband, Buford M. Ashley Sr.; one son, Steven I. Ashley; two brothers, Buddy and Bernell Izard, and one sister, Lois L. Perkins.
Survivors include her two sons, Buford M. Ashley Jr. (Melissa) of Kirtland, N.M., and Jeff Ashley (Karen) of Jackson; two grandchildren, McKayla and Anna Leigh Ashley, both in the Jackson area, and many nephews and nieces.
Hathorn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
