Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church for Burney Dewitt Chance, 69, of Columbia, who died on Thursday, May 9. James Craft of Lufkin, Texas, officiated at the services. Dwight Chance sang “Amazing Grace.” Visitation was held from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14 at Hathorn Funeral Home.

He was employed in the oilfield industry for 22 years. He was employed as a Health and Safety Officer for 24 years in environmental services. He retired from CB & I in 2017. He is remembered for his Christian heart, kind, loving and giving ways and jokingly happy attitude.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Dewitt and Ethelyn Robertson Chance.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Melinda Williamson Chance; two children, Alice C. Wood (Dustin) of South Carolina and Jared B. Chance (Jennifer) of Jackson; four grandchildren, Nathan Wood, Natalie Wood of South Carolina, Ryan Chance and Laney Chance of Jackson, and twin brother, John Berry Chance of Alabama.

Pallbearers were John M. Chance, Stacey L. Chance, Hayden Chance, Adam Chance, John Williamson and Mike Duncan.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Cedar Grove Baptist and Bunker Hill Baptist cemetery funds or the charity of choice.
