Magdalene “Martha” Hammond Walters
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at Colonial Funeral Home for Magdalene “Martha” Hammond Walters, 89, of Columbia, who passed away on Friday, Jan. 18. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation was held from 1 p.m. until the time of the services on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Colonial Funeral Home.
She was one of eight children born in Waldorf, Germany. She came to the United States after marrying Harold Hammond who was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Air Force and has been a resident of Marion County since 1949. She taught herself to speak English and became a hardworking, dedicated employee who worked several jobs before spending 18 years employed with Pioneer Aerospace Corporation. She left there only because she joined her husband in opening Harold Hammond’s Battery Shop where she worked for 26 years.
Although she was of the Lutheran faith in Germany, she was a longtime Baptist here and a member of First Baptist Church in Columbia. She will be remembered for her quick tongue, being very direct and everyone always knew her opinion on a subject. Her children will remember her as a loving mother who was devoted to her family.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harold Hammond and Louis Walters.
Survivors include her two daughters, Sharon Bayard (Dale) and Vicky Stafford (Robert); two sons, Bill Hammond (Faye) and Wendell Hammond (Sharon), and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“Ich liebe dich. Af Wiedershen.”
