Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Hathorn Funeral Home for Sarah Louise Ramsay, 93, of Columbia, who died in Hattiesburg. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Dr. Bryant Barnes officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, March 8 at Hathorn Funeral Home.
She was born on Jan. 29, 1926, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to the late Tollie Clint and Beulah West Cabaniss. She was a 1948 graduate of Methodist School of Nursing in Hattiesburg. She served in various capacities as a Registered Nurse from 1948 until 1967 and taught nursing courses at the Columbia/Marion County Career Center from 1967 until her retirement in 1990.
She was very active in professional and civic organizations and was a former member of the American Nurses Association, the Mississippi Nurses Association, the Marion County Nurses Association, the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Women’s Culture Club of Columbia, the Golden Acres Garden Club, the Mississippi Retired Teachers Association and the Marion County Retired Teachers Association. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia since 1955.
She also enjoyed traveling, reading, needlepointing, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Lee Y. Ramsay Sr.; son, Lee Y. “Sonny” Ramsay Jr.; two brothers, T.C. Cabaniss Jr. and James “Bo” Cabaniss, and two sisters, Jean Murray and Redonia Housley.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda Pitts (Jim) of Columbia; granddaughter, Jennifer Burke of Las Vegas; three great-grandchildren and one sister, Pat Roseberry of Katy, Texas.
Hathorn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
