The West Marion Trojans are just one win away from the Class 3A State Championship series after defeating Magee 6-3 in Game 1 of South State Friday afternoon.
The Trojans jumped on Magee early with a five-run first inning that set the tone for their impressive victory. The first run scored on a throwing error before Dalton Raynes connected for an RBI single up the middle and Robert Patterson later cleared the bases with a three-run double down the line.
Magee answered with one run in the third inning and cut even further into the lead in the top of the sixth inning as Chandler Pittman launched a two-run opposite field homer to make it 5-3.
West Marion tacked on an insurance run, though, in the bottom half as Noel Parrett scored on a Magee throwing error.
West Marion’s Shelby Terrell went the distance on the mound to pick up his 11th win of the season. Game 2 is scheduled at Magee Saturday night at 6.
