Alcorn State’s band, Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite, is set to return to the streets of Columbia Saturday to lead the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade. The Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite performed during last year’s event and transformed the parade into must-see entertainment.
“It’s going to be bigger and better,” parade organizer Charles Lampton said.
Lampton said event organizers are very excited about Alcorn State’s return to Columbia and they’re expecting an even better performance as the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite have grown considerably in the past year.
“Alcorn’s going to blow it out,” he said.
Lampton added this year’s event has a lot more entries than last year’s, including more vendors at Friendship Park. The parade will also feature the bands of East Marion and Bogalusa (La.) high schools.
The parade will begin downtown at Citizens Bank’s Main Street location before turning onto Broad Street and concluding at Friendship Park. There will be a short program about King and what he stood for with the event culminating with good family fun.
“We’re looking for a great time,” Lampton said. “You can bring your children, and we’re just going to have fun and celebrate the legacy of Dr. King.”
The parade will include all sorts of different groups from throughout the county and will feature floats, ATVs, motorcycles, bicycles and more. Each of the groups will be throwing candy.
The parade is set to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.
