A structure fire on Barber Drive claimed the life of a 69-year-old Columbia man Jan. 18 and remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched just before 1 a.m. and was on scene by 1:03 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered Robert Barber deceased in the yard. An autopsy has been conducted, according to Coroner Jessie Graham, but the results have not yet been released.
Columbia Fire Chief Lyle Berard said his department was advised that there may be an individual inside the structure prior to CFD’s arrival, but Barber was in the yard.
The fire, which was at 40 Barber Dr., was limited to a portable building that Barber was believed to be inside when the fire began.
The Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department assisted on scene for two hours before clearing the scene at 3:40 a.m.
There are currently no indications as to what started the fire as it remains under investigation.
Berard advised Columbia and Marion County residents conduct regular checks on their smoke detectors and alarms.
With Columbia and Marion County currently experiencing its coldest period of the year, Berard encouraged residents to be as safe as possible while heating their homes. He said not to overload any circuits and make sure that any space heaters are at least three feet away from any object that could catch fire.
“Make sure you’re being as safe as possible when you’re trying to heat your home,” he said.
Editor's Note: Columbia Fire Chief Lyle Berard did not make any connection between the structure fire and safely heating your home. The cause of the fire is unclear at this time. The advice is general information to help Marion County residents during the winter.
