The true meaning of holidays gets lost more and more with each passing year as today’s society has a destructive tendency to dull their minds with senseless TV and social media. But Calvary Baptist Church is fighting back this holiday season to help Marion County’s children learn and understand the true origin and meaning of Thanksgiving.
Calvary Baptist will be showing Kirk Cameron’s 2012 documentary, “Monumental: In Search of America’s National Treasure” Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. The film follows Cameron’s quest to study the founding principals that made America prosperous, which he believes is encapsulated by the National Monument to the Forefathers in Plymouth, Mass.
Church member Dal Murray, a retired teacher, and Columbia Academy history teacher Scott Oliver are spearheading the event. Oliver shows the 90-minute film to his classes every year at CA and will answer questions following the film.
“In a lot of ways, Americans have little idea about the founding of this country and what really makes this country great is the values it is founded upon,” Oliver said. “A lot of those values are biblical values. … When (the Puritans) laid out their society, they laid it out with God, scripture and biblical values to be the foundation.”
Murray said it is up to families to teach American history to their children and that this event is a great way to do so.
“This film will give viewers a lesson learned from our founding so that you better others that America is truly a Christian nation founded by God,” she said.
She added that the Bible reminds everyone to inform their children about what God has done in the past, and she believes America’s founding is one of His miracles that needs to be remembered.
