Marion County Sheriff's deputies were conducting a safety checkpoint on the evening of April 5 at the intersection of Gates Road and Crawley Road, which led to a substantial drug arrest.
Around 11:55 p.m., deputies made contact with Marcus Antonio Herring, 23, of Bassfield and smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from his vehicle.
An investigation was conducted, and Herring was found to be in possession of 370 milliliters of promethazine with codeine, 14.40 grams of THC edible chips, 130.37 grams of THC edible candies, 28.11 grams of marijuana, 38.50 grams of packaged marijuana, scales, bagging materials and a firearm.
For reference, 28 grams of marijuana is about the amount that would fill a pint-sized Ziploc bag.
Herring was arrested by Deputy Michael Hudson and was charged with five counts of possession with intent while in possession of a firearm by a felon. His bond was set at $100,000.
