I will never forget the day that I was introduced to Lanny. I knew he would have an impact on my life as he has had on the lives of many in our community. One of the first things he asked of me was for a promotion. That was our Lanny! He got his promotion.
We still mourn the loss of Captain Lanny Arinder, a long-time police officer whose dedication, kindness, and humor left an indelible mark on all of those he served. Lanny was more than just a protector; he was our friend. His character and honor, coupled with his compassionate nature, defined his service to Columbia.
Lanny was a proud veteran. He loved his country and proudly wore his veteran ball cap when he was off duty. Bogie’s will not be the same without him gracing their dining hall, sharing stories with his closest friends while enjoying lunch.
Known for his humor, he was easily spotted driving down Church Street in his pick-up with his trademark handcuffs hanging from his rear-view mirror. I find myself looking for him while in town. I sorely miss seeing him, having him come in my office after a day watching over the kids at one of Columbia’s schools.
As Lanny’s career drew to a close, he required a walking stick to help with his mobility. We made jokes about his stick, it became a part of his uniform, his everyday equipment. Even during this time of decline in his health, his commitment to serving his community never wavered. Captain Lanny Arinder’s legacy is one of heartfelt dedication. He will be deeply missed.
Rest easy my friend.
