Jackson, MS — Acclaimed composer and curator Buck McDaniel, originally from Columbia, Mississippi, will debut his latest work for solo piano, Any Room Is A Room To Read In (after Eudora Welty), with performances at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson on Tuesday, May 6, and the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel on Thursday, May 8.
Inspired by Eudora Welty’s essays and interviews on creativity and the significance of "place" for artists, McDaniel’s new composition offers an evocative tribute from one Mississippi artist to another. The program promises to deliver an engaging and heartfelt exploration of artistic process and identity.
Known for weaving storytelling into his compositions, McDaniel’s past projects include a collaboration with Sam Smith and Sharon Stone on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, a musical partnership with Paul Mescal in the upcoming feature film The History of Sound, compositions for NPR’s The Moth Radio Hour, and Memory Ground—a powerful commemorative piece marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, commissioned by The Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York in 2021.
Performances are free. Additional program details are available at Mississippi Museum of Art and Lauren Rogers Museum of Art.
