The Better Newspaper Contest is an annual event that pits the best of the best in Mississippi journalism against each other to see who comes out on top.
C-P Publisher Joshua Campbell led the way, claiming 11 total awards and three first-place finishes. He placed first in Sports News Story, Game Story and Breaking News Photograph. He also earned second place for Business News Story, Breaking News Photograph and Photo Series, third place in In-Depth Investigative Coverage and honorable mentions in Sports Feature Story, Feature Story, Photo Series and Lede.

The Columbian-Progress staff collectively got third place in General Excellence.
“I am extremely proud of my staff’s effort in the 2023 Better Newspaper Contest,” Campbell said. “Our focus every day is solely on providing Marion County with up-to-date, quality news, and it’s always nice to be recognized for our hard work. However, we are hoping the haul will be larger for our 2024 contributions.”
