“To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20 (NKJV)
Isaiah is speaking here of mediums and wizards who whisper and mutter false messages to those who consult them; this is also a prophetic assessment of all who do not speak according to God’s word. They are those who have no light to guide them through the darkness of this world and are spiritually blind because they do not rely on God’s word (the law and testimony).
Throughout history mankind has sought to walk alone in the darkness of unbelief and disobedience, disregarding God’s word in favor of self will; some have found that we simply can’t successfully navigate the gloom and anguish of this world without the Light as our guide, though many continue in the darkness and will not listen and live in the light. Those who persist in so doing will speak of doctrines of which they are ignorant as though they were the most learned of disciples, and will cause others to walk as the blind must.
Thanks be to God that while we were enshrouded in darkness, He made provision for our blindness, and, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.” 9:2 The “light” that has shined into our own inner darkness is none other than Jesus, the light of the world; those of us who lived in the “valley of the shadow of death” have been given hope.
Mankind will not, as a whole, learn to walk in the light that is Christ Jesus; a few will see the Light and walk accordingly, many will not and will perish. Every generation, every individual, must learn to follow Jesus. It is imperative that we see the light, follow the light, and tell others about the light.
Those of us who have been blinded by the Light are blind to what the world offers us as a poor substitute for the Light of Christ. We, like the city of New Jerusalem, will have no need of sun or moon, for God’s glory will illumine all through the Lamb Who is it’s light! (Revelation 21:23)
