West Marion High School show choir New Era ended its season with another first place win in a division of nine groups at the Biloxi Gulf Coast Classic March 9.
The victory was New Era’s fifth out of six competitions during the 2023-2024 competition season. With each first place victory, New Era also took home best vocals and best show design. Three of those victories included division sweeps of best vocals, best choreography and best show design.
"I am very proud of this group and what they have accomplished this season,” New Era Director Jon Bullock said. “The goal this year was to consistently compete at a high level, and they have ultimately done that."
Now that the season is over and the year is coming to an end, New Era members reflected on their hard work and what the program means to them.
"As a senior in show choir, these last few moments feel so bittersweet,” senior Kendyl Thornhill said. “Show choir has taught me that no matter how tough life gets, I have the ability to keep going. It's given me discipline, my favorite teacher and so much joy. Of course, like everything, there was some stress, but the good always outweighed the bad. Show choir helped me grow socially and step out of my comfort zone in ways I never thought I could. I encourage any underclassmen who enjoy singing and dancing to give New Era a try."
Sophomore Drake Sumrall said the competition season was great for New Era.
"We've earned first place, the Fan Favorite Award and second and fourth runner-up. One of the most memorable competitions was when we traveled to Opelika, Alabama and won every category in our division."
New Era will end the year with its annual Spring Revue on Saturday, April 27, at 3 p.m. at West Marion High School. New ensemble numbers, student solos, performances by the elementary show choir and the last performance of the 2023-2024 competition show will highlight the afternoon.
