Cougar Archery not only won its 2A division at South State last week, Columbia Academy also scored the highest out of more than 100 teams in all divisions, topping D’Iberville and Oak Grove high schools in the top-3. The team is now 9-0.
CA archery head coach Mike Barber said the Cougars had a great day and relied on a simple approach.
“We took the coaching approach of ‘do your thing,’” he said. “’You've shot great all year (so) just treat it like any other competition.’ We scored our highest competition score ever a 3,389. That's only 11 points off of what we consider nationally elite. We have the potential of hitting the 3,400 mark. We just have to do it.”
Up next for the Cougars will be a trip to West Marion this week followed by the MAIS & AIMS state championships. Barber said the goal again this year is to bring home not one but two state championships.
In the AIMS division, Columbia Academy is classified as a 2A among 25 teams in the division. In MAIS, the Cougars are a 5A program.
“We're never over confident, conceded or arrogant. We have worked for years to build the program we have,” Barber said. “We'll practice and prepare like we've never won anything.”
