The Columbia Police Department, along with several other law enforcement agencies, are still searching for Calvin DeShawn Lewis, 39, of Columbia, who led them on a high-speed chase from Columbia into Lamar County before he crashed his vehicle and fled on foot.
Law enforcement deployed a spike strip that caused Lewis to lose control of his vehicle and crash on U.S. 98 in the Bellevue community near Cole Road. Lewis then allegedly fled from his vehicle and escaped into the woods, where police are actively searching for him.
Lewis is wanted for multiple felony charges, including burglary and elderly abuse. Columbia Police Chief Michael Kelly and Det. Micheal Turner said he will also be charged with felony eluding and other charges based on “his reckless actions today.”
The CPD is being assisted by the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.
Chief Kelly urges anyone with information that could help locate Lewis to contact the Columbia Police Department or call 9-1-1.
The Columbian-Progress will continue to update this story as more information is made available.
