Two safety checkpoints in Marion County sent two people to jail for drug charges and more.
On Oct. 4, Lazaro Zelaya, 35, of Columbia was arrested when he stopped at a safety checkpoint at the intersection of Old Mississippi 35 North and Mississippi 35 North. While searching his vehicle, Marion County Sheriff’s deputies discovered a .22 revolver, a glass meth pipe and a pill bottle containing possibly methamphetamine, according to Marion County Sheriff’s Office Captain Pete Williams.
Zelaya was arrested and charged with controlled substance: paraphernalia-use, possession, possession with intent to use; enhanced penalty for controlled substance with possession of a firearm and DUI 1st offense, under the influence of any substance that would impair.
Zelaya is currently out of jail after posting a $21,500 bond.
The next night, Oct. 5, while conducting a safety checkpoint at the intersection of Columbia-Purvis Road and Lampton Hilltop Road, deputies arrested Wesley Matthew Glasscock, 39, of Lumberton. During a search of Glasscock’s vehicle, suspected methamphetamine and a glass meth pipe were found, according to Williams. Glasscock was charged with DUI 2nd offense, felony possession, possession of paraphernalia and a swapped tag. He also has two indictments against him for fraudulent use of identity and another charge of telephone harassment.
Glasscock is free on a $76,750 bond.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
