Both the East Marion Eagles and Lady Eagles have been enjoying some time off, but the action picks back up this week for them on their home court for the Region 8-2A Tournament.
The Eagles (10-2, 7-1) were expected to be the No. 2 seed going into the district tournament, but the Eagles ended up earning the No. 1 seed with St. Patrick (21-3, 6-2) losing to North Forrest Feb. 4.
With claiming the Region 8-2A regular season title, the Eagles got to avoid facing Joe Holloway and North Forrest in the semifinals Wednesday and instead played Collins (results unavailable at press time). On Tuesday head coach Calvin Brown said Collins is very competitive in its own right.
Collins had only played a handful of district games this season, including one against the Eagles (64-41 win for East Marion). But Collins did play North Forrest very tough last week, losing by just three points 51-48 Feb. 2.
The Eagles haven’t played since Jan. 29, picking up three forfeit victories last week, but Brown said he’s been pleased with how they have practiced even though in this year of Covid judging anything off practice is uncertain. With a playoff berth already secured, the Eagles will be playing for seeding in the Class 2A playoffs that begin next week.
The district title game will be Friday night at 7:30, while the consolation game will be at 4 p.m. The Eagles will play either North Forrest or St. Patrick, depending on Wednesday’s results.
The Lady Eagles (7-7, 5-3), meanwhile, played St. Patrick in the district semifinals Tuesday, but results were unavailable at press time. North Forrest played Perry Central in the other semifinal matchup Tuesday. The winners of the semifinal games will meet in the district championship Thursday at 7:30 p.m., and the consolation game will be at 4 p.m.
