Former Amanda Elzy High School standout Detrick Munford Jr. is returning to the Delta after two years at Jones College to continue his football career at Delta State University in Cleveland.
Munford is wrapping up his sophomore year at Jones this semester and will enroll at DSU in January. He signed with the Statesmen on Wednesday during the early National Signing Day.
Munford, who is majoring in sports medicine, finished his second year at Jones with nine solo stops and 12 assisted tackles starting as a defensive end for the Bobcats. He also had three quarterback hurries and two sacks. As a freshman, the 6-foot-2, 262-pounder had 10 total tackles (two solos) and a fumble recovery.
“Delta State was the first school to bring me in for a visit, and they stayed in contact with me,” said Munford, who also had offers from Grambling State, Tennessee-Martin, Tarleton State and Mississippi Valley State. “I’ll get to play with Alex Larry, and he was the one who encouraged me to come to Delta State. He was my host the day I visited and showed me around the campus and facilities. I’m looking forward to playing with him next season.”
Larry will be a senior defensive lineman for the Statesmen in 2026. He played at Greenwood High School and Itawamba Community College.
“I really enjoyed meeting Coach (Todd) Cooley,” Munford added. “He’s all about business and winning. I feel like they will help develop me as a player. My parents will also get to see me play with it only being about a 50-minute ride to Cleveland.”
Munford said the coaches at DSU see him playing defensive end and rushing the passer on third down.
“I started all nine games this past season at Jones,” said Munford, who finished his senior campaign at Elzy with 131 total tackles and 20 sacks. “I know there are some things I need to work on during the spring and summer to get better.”
