A female juvenile was shot in the head Friday night in the area of Broodmoor Avenue and Lafayette Street, and she is currently being treated at the hospital. An 18-year-old Columbia man is being held without bond for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and a juvenile was released from custody with possible future charges.
Kannon Sellers was the assailant charged with aggravated assault, and the juvenile's potential charges are pending results from the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory.
Dispatch received a shots fired call Friday evening, and the Columbia Police Department responded to find a female with a gun shot wound to the head, according to a press release issued by the CPD. The juvenile victim was transported to Marion General Hospital to be treated.
CPD detectives and Marion County Sheriff's Office investigators swiftly identified the two suspects and brought them in for questioning, according to the statement.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the young lady and her family, and we wish her a speedy recovery," CPD Chief Adrien Fortenberry said in a statement.
Sellers was arrested by CPD Officer Joszef Scott at 1:14 a.m. Saturday.
