On Oct. 24, First United Methodist Church of Columbia came together for its annual Shrimp Boil, delivering an event that truly exceeded expectations. Although some initially wondered how the event would fare without a few key organizers, the church community stepped up in faith, demonstrating that with trust in God and a united effort, remarkable things can be achieved. This year’s Shrimp Boil was not only a success but one that surpassed even our hopes.
Under the direction of Marilyn Griffin, who chaired the Shrimp Boil committee, the event ran smoothly from start to finish. Her leadership brought together a dedicated team of volunteers who handled every detail with precision and care—from organizing volunteers to overseeing logistics. Thanks to the commitment of the committee and our entire community, nearly a thousand shrimp and chicken plates were sold, with proceeds directly supporting our ministries and outreach efforts. The funds raised will have a meaningful impact in our community.
The day was filled with joy, camaraderie, and a powerful sense of togetherness. Volunteers poured their hearts into every aspect of the event, from prepping and cooking the shrimp and chicken to managing the drive-thru line and serving plates with a smile. Working together, each person played an invaluable role in making the event a success. We had heard voices saying that, without certain familiar faces, pulling off the Shrimp Boil might be too much of a challenge. But by leaning on one another and trusting in our faith, we achieved something extraordinary.
Attendees couldn’t stop raving about the food. The general consensus was that this year’s shrimp was some of the best people had ever tasted—seasoned to perfection and served generously. We heard it time and again, “This is the best shrimp I’ve ever had.”
Beyond the meals, the Shrimp Boil embodied a spirit of connection and community, reflecting the deep bonds within our congregation and the broader Columbia area. It was more than a fundraiser—it was a chance to give back. A portion of the proceeds will support our local food pantry, reaffirming our commitment to serving those in need and extending God’s love beyond our church walls.
Looking forward, excitement is already growing for next year’s Shrimp Boil. Organizers are eager to build on this year’s success.
As we reflect on this event, there is a profound sense of gratitude and pride in what our church has accomplished. The Shrimp Boil was a testament to the strength of our community and the enduring power of faith and fellowship. This was not just a fundraiser; it was a celebration of who we are and what we can achieve together.
First United Methodist Church of Columbia has shown that, with God’s guidance and a shared mission, anything is possible. This year’s Shrimp Boil stands as a reminder of the impact we can make when we come together, believe in our purpose, and serve each other and our Savior.
