Meredith Bass has been the new Marion County Miss Hospitality for a week and already her schedule is getting busy.
Bass, the daughter of Mike and Melanie Bass of Columbia, helped chaperone and escort fourth graders from Columbia Elementary School Tuesday as they went on a historical tour of the city. The tour, led by Marion County Historical Museum Curator Chris Watts and local author Brandi Perry, helped prepare Bass for her role representing Marion County.
“I’m really excited,” Bass said. “I really love Columbia and I’m excited to do some hands-on work helping make Columbia better and helping make it grow and helping to promote it to the state. I’m really excited to represent Marion County at the state competition in July.”
The senior at Mississippi State University will compete at the state competition during the week of July 15 at the Saenger Theater in Hattiesburg. Bass, who was crowned during the May 8 Rotary Club meeting, is majoring in kinesiology with a concentration in clinical exercise physiology. She is also pursing a minor in psychology.
At MSU, she is a member of the Kappa Delta sorority, where she serves as intramural chair. She works at Oktibbeha County Hospital in Starkville as a physical therapy tech. She is also involved with several research projects in the kinesiology department. She is a member of the Exercise Science Honor Society, where she will serve as president this coming year. She will also serve as president of the Neuromechanics Undergraduate Lab this coming year.
Other honors and activities include being a member of Lambda Sigma Honor Society her sophomore year, Order of Omega Greek Honor Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta, and Omicron Delta Kappa. She is an active member of North Columbia Baptist Church, where she sings in the choir.
“The committee is super excited because Meredith possesses everything that we want in a Miss Hospitality to represent us,” Danielle Whittington, a committee member and teacher at Columbia Primary School, said. “She’s got the brains, she’s beautiful, she is studious and she cares about her hometown. I think that we have a Miss Hospitality that represents everything that Columbia is.”
