The Friends of the Library will host its annual Heritage Fest Book Sale Saturday on the grounds of the Columbia-Marion County Public Library during the annual Heritage Festival in City Park.
The sale runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and features a variety of books, according to Sharron Conn, who along with Barbie Patterson is the co-chairmen of the Friends of the Library.
“We’ll have a variety of fiction, non-fiction, history, how-to books, cookbooks, religious and inspirations books, photography, gardening, travel and more,” Conn said. “This year, we will have a children’s tent for ages to teens. Parents, kids, teachers, seniors, everyone can find something.”
Hardback books will be priced at $1 and paperbacks 50 cents, according to Conn.
“It’s our only fundraiser for the year,” she said. “We’re the biggest contributor to the library. Several thousand dollars goes to support the library and especially the children’s programs. The money we raise supports all of the programs from children’s programs to adult programs such as the ones where we bring authors in. The main thing is to see that we get more books into the home for families to read together.”
This year’s sale will feature a large selection of books, according to Conn.
“We have a huge amount of books,” she said. “We’ve got more than 1,000 that were donated. We have a lot of children’s books.”
Conn said organizers are also seeking help for Saturday from local students.
“We’re asking for high school seniors who would like some community service hours to come and help us set up or tear down,” she said.
Friends of the Library serves a variety of roles, from purchasing the library’s Christmas tree to sponsoring events and purchasing books and equipment.
“We’re sponsoring a number of programs for children and adults at the library,” Conn said. “We’re trying to get some music programs and teen programs. We’re even working on the children’s Christmas party now. It is set for Dec. 12, and every child receives a free book.”
The book sale and children’s tent will be set up in front of the library on Broad Street.
