A man has been charged with his girlfriend’s shooting death in Foxworth, and he remained hospitalized Tuesday with a gunshot wound himself.
Tamaneka Murree Alexander, 30, of Foxworth, died Friday night as a result of her injuries, Marion County Sheriff Berkley Hall said in a news release.
Handy Anthony Willis Jr., 48, also of Foxworth, was charged with murder late Monday, Capt. Pete Williams said at a news conference Tuesday. Willis was in stable condition at Forrest General Hospital, according to the release. Both were shot o nce.
Deputies responded to a report of a shooting at a residence at 7 Water Valley Road around 11 p.m. Friday.
“They found an unresponsive male outside the residence with what appeared to be a gunshot wound and an unresponsive female inside the residence with what appeared to be a gunshot wound,” Williams said. “The male was transported by AAA Ambulance Service and the female by helicopter to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, where she passed away.”
“It appears to be a domestic situation,” Williams said. “The investigation is ongoing.”
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit has been called on to assist with the probe. The sheriff’s department is not releasing details about what happened during the shooting as it continues to gather evidence.
Williams said they developed Willis as a suspect after speaking with witnesses.
An initial appearance where bond is set is required within 72 hours of an arrest, and Williams said he was in contact with the district attorney’s office to find a resolution to that considering Willis was hospitalized.
“We don’t know if the judge will go to the hospital room and do his initial appearance, set a bond that way,” he said.
