Gayle Reed has been a mainstay in downtown Columbia for more than three decades, but her business is changing with the times.
“All these years I’ve been G & S Rental since 1986,” she said. “From G & S Rental we went into the G & S Tax Service business in 1992.”
The tax side of the business originated from a rental business conference in which several other rental companies were discussing the idea of entering the tax industry. Now, G & S Rental is being liquidated and the tax business is rising to the forefront moving forward.
Reed is joined in the 618 Main St. office by head tax preparer Angela Turnage, who has been with G & S for 20 years, and receptionist Alicia Dunaway.
“We prepare simple tax returns or do itemized tax returns. The guys that work overseas or in the oilfield we work on those with foreign tax credits as far as the ones who work overseas,” Turnage explained. “We also do it for different states for those who work out-of-state.”
If anyone is having complications with their tax returns, G & S Tax Service is a one-stop shop for all their needs.
“We also do amended tax returns. If you have a problem with your taxes we help you get it solved,” Reed said. “We offer assistance to anybody who has been audited and needs help.”
“If they’re audited, we get everything together for them and fax everything in to the Internal Revenue Service for them,” Turnage added. “Any correspondence they get they bring back in to us.”
Every year people struggle with the complicated nature of paying taxes and figuring out what they need to do to get the highest tax return possible. G & S takes those concerns away and eases the hardship.
“When you come in, we’ll sit down and tell you exactly what you have to have,” Reed said. “We have some papers we hand out with hints of what to look for, things that are deductible.”
While helping new and longtime customers alike get the most out of their tax returns is one of G & S Tax Service’s main goals, it is not the top one.
“We appreciate our customers and try to treat them with respect. We try to treat them like family and help them in every area we can,” Reed said.

Reed has been in the business for more than 25 years and is hoping to keep the momentum going.
“I’ve been here 26 years and God blessing, I’ll be here 26 more,” she said.
