Since October 2005, owners Wayne and Bobbie Regan have created a family atmosphere within Kane’s Catfish, Seafood & Steakhouse, and their generosity for their community neighbors is infectious.
“On the back of our menu, it says ‘come in as friends, leave as family,’” Wayne said. “That’s how we treat everybody.”
Kane’s offers an array of delicious items that have led the restaurant to become a local favorite.
“We serve Mississippi farm-raised catfish that we get in fresh weekly. We serve certified angus beef steaks, and we have our seafood menu,” Wayne said. “It’s a variety of items on our menus with several appetizers to choose from.”
Outside of the building, though, Kane’s is just as active with its catering business. Its focus is with fundraisers, such as the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, several churches, baseball teams, Relay for Life and others.
“We have a catering trailer and go to different events with it. We’ve been doing the car show for about a year now,” Wayne said. “We just got back from Black Creek doing their crawfish festival; we do a lot of different events like that.”
“We try to do local first,” Bobbie added. “We try to do things in Columbia and Marion County like Gator Fest, Heritage Festival and the reenactments at the John Ford Home. If a church needs us, we like to help them. We do a good bit with Morgantown Church of God. When we do that for churches, we always give back a percentage of what we take in.”
While Kane’s is only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m., it opens its doors for fundraising groups on some Tuesday nights as well.
“We’ve started doing Tuesday night fundraisers where we open up for an organized group, not just anybody,” Bobbie said. “We just did North Columbia Baptist Church youth group this past week. We let the kids in the youth groups come in and wait tables, and all the tips they get that night goes to their youth fund. Plus we give a percentage of the sales to the youth group.”
Bobbie added there are certain occasions Kane’s will use one of their regular business days for a fundraiser.
“It has to be something that I feel that God is calling us to do,” she said. “We’ve done one for Beth Faine, who used to work here, when she had cancer (which is in remission) on a Thursday night. Our waitresses waited, but all of the tips went to her and a percentage of sales. We did one another time for Kimberly Webb when she did a mission trip to India.”
Being a part of the community is important to the Regan’s.
“Because we have been blessed as much as we have, we like to give back to other people,” Bobbie said. “That’s kind of our little mission.”
Bobbie added they are thankful for their loyal customers.
“We’re just thankful. We have the best customer base around,” Bobbie said. “They are just awesome customers and just good people.”
“We have a lot of customers from outside of Marion County,” Wayne added. “They come from Louisiana and Walthall County, and we have customers who come in from Alabama when they go deer or duck hunting and this is their first stop. Our customers are loyal.”
Bobbie said they’ve been able to witness customer have children and watch them grow up, but they have also had several pass away, which tears them up.
“We come to know them, love them and become attached,” she said. “It’s hard.”
However, the Regan’s enjoy getting to know each and every one of their customers. Wayne makes it a point to come out of the kitchen to talk to them and get to know them because they aren’t just customers to them. They are family.
