For the third time in the past 18 months, the building shared by Piggly Wiggly and Fred’s has been struck by a vehicle.
Brenda Kemp was trying to park in front of the grocery store on Mississippi 13 Tuesday morning but accidentally accelerated instead of coming to a stop.
“It was an elderly lady, and she said she hit the gas instead of the brake,” Columbia Police Sergeant Peggy Foster said as Kemp’s vehicle was loaded onto a tow truck. “Instead of slamming on the brakes, she slammed on the gas. She struck two vehicles, knocked over the column, hit the propane tanks, the building and ended up near the front doors.”
While the damage was extensive, there were no reported injuries. Columbia police and the Columbia Fire Department responded.
