An afternoon fire on a busy city street destroyed a classic Corvette Monday.
Owner Reginald R. Young of Columbia said he was driving in his 1984 Corvette near 2 p.m. coming from South High School Avenue when the fire began.
“I was driving and it just exploded,” he said.
Young turned off South High School and pulled the vehicle off Broad Street in front of Sav-On-Drugs and called 911.
Columbia Police Department officers sealed off Broad Street from the courthouse to South High School. Firefighters arrived within about 5 minutes and quickly extinguished the blaze.
Young told police he did not know what caused the fire. Firefighters cleared the scene after about 30 minutes, and police reopened Broad Street.
