The Marion County School District earned eight awards recently for performing better on state exams than other schools with comparable socioeconomic circumstances.
The Program of Research and Evaluation for Public Schools announced the “value-added” honors Feb. 26 during the Mississippi Education Partnership Conference. During Monday’s Marion County School District meeting, teachers and administrators were recognized.
Winners included:
West Marion Primary for the English Language Arts Value Added Award in the third through eighth-grade category
West Marion Elementary School and East Marion Junior High School in the math category
East Marion High School for algebra I, biology and English II
West Marion High School for algebra and English II.
The awards are based on state test results with the differences in the socioeconomic background of the students factored in. Schools that are deemed as adding value are those performing significantly better than other schools with comparable socioeconomic circumstances.
Superintendent Wendy Bracey said she was proud of the accomplishments.
“Anytime we earn something like this and our test scores are great, we celebrate the teachers,” she said. “It is always a building thing. If our third graders do well, it’s a building thing. We only test in third great, but it starts in first and second grades. We want to acknowledge those teachers.”
Subject area teachers were honored during the Board meeting and each principal spoke about their staffs.
