This week’s heavy rains didn’t stop off-duty Columbia Fire Department firefighters from helping to deliver donated dog food to the Columbia-Marion County Animal Shelter.
Shift captains Reggie Crowther and Nathan Guy joined firefighters Scott Bennett and Joey Dantin along with Nichole Guy, Animal Control Officer Amanda Bennett and several inmate helpers in unloading the food which was donated by Nelson Wholesale of Columbia. Cooper’s Towing and Recovery donated the use of a truck for transporting the seven pallets of dry and canned dog food.
“We just wanted to help out,” Capt. Guy said. “They needed help getting the food and we (firefighters) wanted to volunteer to help out.”
Last week, Amanda Bennett put out a plea on Facebook for the food, saying that the shelter was very low on dog food. She said that cat food was not needed at this time.
“We’re so grateful to those who donate to us,” she said.
The shelter is also in constant need of other supplies, including brooms, liquid laundry detergent, cleaners such as Fabuloso or Pine Sol and paper towels.
Earlier this year, volunteers helped build new kennels for many of the dogs.
The Columbia-Marion County Animal Shelter is located at 144 Airport Road. The phone number is (601) 731-2991.
