The recent Zellco Federal Credit Union Duck Drop was a huge success, organizers say, raising needed funds for the Columbia Fire Department.
The event, held Nov. 3 at the Pearl River Interpretive Plaza, featured multiple races of rubber ducks that entrants paid $5 apiece to sponsor. Tammy Riley of Zellco said the event was so successful that they sold out of ducks.
“I’m so proud of the individuals and businesses of Columbia for stepping up to get the fire department this lifesaving equipment that will be so beneficial to our town,” she said.
The Duck Race helped raise $2,750 to go along with a previous grant and city match to help purchase airbags for the fire department.
“It is used for extrication purposes and used to stabilize vehicles when we are trying to free victims,” Fire Chief Jeff McKenzie said. “We have a lot of accident calls, especially on U.S. 98 and around the city. These will be very valuable. It’s a great tool to have.”
Part of the funding for the airbags comes from a $1,000 CenterPoint Energy Community Partnership Grant, according to McKenzie.
“We recently received word that we had gotten the grant,” he said. “We are really thankful for the money. It’s part of a program that they do to give back to communities. We are so thankful for all of the support.”
The grand prize, an ice chest full of camping gear, games, and other items needed for camping valued at more than $300, went to Challenger Deepwell.
Second place was Conner Swayze, third Angela Bass and fourth Becky Graham.
