A fire Sunday morning that destroyed a home in the Darbun community capped a busy week for an area fire department.
The Morgantown Volunteer Fire Department arrived at a home located at 58 Reid Road early Sunday to find the structure engulfed in flames.
“We were able to save a secondary structure behind it and no people or pets were injured,” a statement from the department read. “We offer our most sincere prayers to the owners for their loss.”
One of the residents of the home, Tori Singley Applewhite, took to Facebook Sunday to describe the blaze she and several families members escaped.
“We are all OK,” she wrote. “We lost everything this morning. This was my great grandmother’s house. I lived there 35 years of my life. But we have what matters. I appreciate all of the first responders – they are amazing.”
Also responding to the fire, which was dispatched at 7:23 a.m. to the scene near the Walthall County line, were the Foxworth Volunteer Fire Department, Walthall 4th District and a Pine Burr firefighter for mutual aid.
Morgantown also responded to a fire late Saturday on Morgantown Road and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. According to a report, the fire was contained and the structure saved, with damage to the kitchen area. Firefighters from Morgantown and Foxworth were dispatched at 11:14 p.m. Friday and didn’t clear until 1:07 a.m. Saturday.
On Jan. 31, firefighters from Morgantown were called to a report of a dog trapped at Red Bluff. Members of the rope rescue team found the dog on a ledge and carried it to safety. The dog has since been adopted and is doing well. Firefighters cleared the scene after less than an hour.
