It was a busy weekend for the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, which quickly extinguished two house fires over the weekend.
Sunday at 6:51 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 1450 Lampton Hilltop Road, according to Chief Cole Robbins.
“A passerby saw smoke coming out of the attic of the house,” he said. “The homeowners were inside and had no idea anything was going on. They were alerted to it quickly. The had their fireplace going and we’re not sure what caused it, but an area around the fireplace caught fire and extended into the attic.”
Robbins said the early discovery of the fire led to firefighters being able to quickly extinguish it.
“We got the call and had an engine on the scene within three or four minutes and had the fire under control in less than 10 minutes,” he said. “There was minor damage to the home, but it could have been much worse.”
The fire department had five trucks on scene, including three engines, a tanker and a squad truck.
“We made entry from the carport using an attic ladder and went right to the fire and got it put out,” he said. “There was very little smoke and water damage. Somebody caught it early and reported it early.”
Firefighters also quickly responded to a call at 3:52 p.m. Saturday at 161 Old Sumrall Road. Firefighters needed only 25 minutes on scene to investigate the smoke in the home.
